I've been part of discussions and collaboration between the City of Kitchener, Region Of Waterloo,
Waterloo Region District School Board, Chicopee Hills Parent Council and Student Transportation Services to improve safety for students walking and cycling to Chicopee Hills Public School along the north side of Fairway road and for other pedestrians and cyclists.
The Region Of Waterloo is responsible for Fairway Road and they began replacing the sidewalk on the north side of Fairway Road from Pebblecreek Drive to Lackner Blvd with a multi-use trail on July 2nd. When it's completed, it will bring significant safety improvements safety improvements for Chicopee Hills Public School students and pedestrians and cyclists.
The improvements include
Replacing the sidewalk with a new multi-use path on the north side of the street
Removing the traffic island at Lackner Boulevard
Reconfiguring the sidewalk ramps and pavement markings at the intersections
Relocating light poles
Installing signage
Landscaping
The trail is scheduled to be completed before school starts in September.
One of the biggest improvements is at the bridge where the former sidewalk edge was close to the bike lane and traffic. The new trail eliminates that pinch point and keeps a consistent, wider and safe path.
The intersection at Fairway and Lackner is also improved.
