Indigenous Peoples Gathering Space In Victoria Park
SUNDAY JUNE 21 - NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY AT 9AM
 The Indigenous Peoples Gathering Space in the South West Area Of Victoria Park (also called Willow River Park by Indigenous Community Members and allies) opened with a sacred fire and special ceremony on National Indigenous Peoples Day, Sunday June 21, 2026

The design is based on the Indigenous Thirteen Moons And Turtle Teachings.  It was developed through consultation with local Indigenous groups and consultants Amy Smoke and Bangishimo from the O:se Kenhionhata:tie/Willow River Centre.

It is a dedicated site for local Indigenous organizations to come together for sacred fires, ceremonies and traditional wellness practices. It's the first of its kind in a City of Kitchener park space.

The City consulted with local Indigenous groups to identify Indigenous placemaking opportunities within Victoria Park and through that consultation, committed to installing this gathering space represented by a ceremonial fire location.

Amy Smoke, Co-Director of the Willow River Centre. said; “Taking into account the feedback from community and the many Nations who gather on these lands, we wanted it to include a variety of teachings, as well as recognizing our continued presence in this urban space, here on the Haldimand Tract today,” said
