PROJECT DESIGN UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2025 HERE

We're upgrading Prospect Park and adding a Stormwater Facility to the park. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and is estimated to be complete by 2028.

Climate change will bring more intense storms and more frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Creating more spaces for stormwater to collect in neighbourhoods reduces flooding during storms.

Right now, runoff from the neighbourhood flows through a stormwater pipe under Prospect Park to Montgomery Creek and the Grand River. This makes Prospect Park a good place to add a new stormwater facility to collect runoff.

By adding stormwater storage to the neighbourhood, we can:
  • Improve water quality in Montgomery Creek and the Grand River
  • Reduce the risk of flooding in downstream Neighbourhoods
  • Reduce erosion in Montgomery Creek
  • Improve resilience against climate change
  • Enhance community safety

While we do this, can can also improve and enhance the park features and the trails through the park.
We want to hear what park experiences are important to you. Your input will help guide the design of these upgrades so your park serves your neighbourhood better.
There was a well attended Open House on Wednesday June 18, 2025 at Franklin Public School.

Staff gathered the input received from residents who attended the Open House & those who did the online survey.

Summary of What We Heard Report From The Two Design Options Presented:

Concept One:
Active & Play – Playgrounds, fitness path, sports court, open lwn.

Concept Two:
Passive & Nature Connections – Amphitheatre, shaded picnic areas, pollinator gardens.  

Preferred Concept:
Concept One was the most popular.
People liked naturalized landscapes and playgrounds from Concept One and pollinator areas from Concept Two.
The sports court and amphitheatre had less support.  
The design team will add pollinator areas to concept one and try to incorporate shade where feasible.

Our staff are now working on the 60% detailed design based on the preferred concept.
