Canada Day In Kitchener - 2022
As we celebrate Canada Day and all the good things about our country. I acknowledge our history includes the residential school system that took Indigenous children away from their families, their language and their way of life. Take time today to honour the survivors and grieve for the indigenous children in unmarked graves and their families. Their pain has continued and been passed down through generations. We all must play a part in working for Truth and Reconciliation.
I encourage you to look into and supporting the work of The Healing Of The Seven Generations. They provide programs and services for Indigenous people in our community. their website is HERE
The Gord Downie - Chanie Wenjack Fund improves the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education, and connections between all peoples in Canada. They have learning and educational information and programs on their website. One is ReconciliACTION, to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people together in the spirit of reconciliation to create awareness, share, and learn. Consider supporting their work and find learning opportunities HERE
Gord Downie was deeply moved by the story of Chanie Wenjack. Chanie left the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora. He was walking home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away. He died on October 22, 1966. Gord wrote poems about Chanie and turned them into songs that made up his album The Secret Path.
